Rochester Art Gallery and Craft Case, is situated on the ground floor of the Medway Visitor Information Centre. The gallery presents an exciting programme of high quality contemporary visual art and craft that is of regional, national and international significance.
The gallery showcases challenging, contemporary visual arts by emerging and established artists, from fine art and craft to digital media and film. Recent exhibitions have included works by acclaimed artists Kate MccGwire, Billy Childish, Hannah Maybank, Shelly Goldsmith, Tessa Farmer and Jessie Brennan, as well as works by exceptional Medway artists including Steve Mace, Marissa Mardon, Matt Bray, Zara Carpenter, Mark Barnes, Wolf Howard and Medway Fine Printmakers.
Rochester Art Gallery is funded and supported by Medway Council through the Arts Development Team. The majority of exhibitions are curated especially for the space and the Exhibitions Co-Ordinator works with other galleries, curators, artists and arts professionals to develop four new shows, including special commissions and projects a year.
The gallery promotes engagement, participation and accessibility to a wide audience; developing and increasing knowledge of visual arts and contemporary craft to a range of ages.
The team work closely with a range of partners including the Guildhall Museum, UCA, University of Kent School of Music and Fine Art, Medway Print Festival and Rochester Cathedral.
The programme supports local and international practitioners, and provides opportunities for the development of new work. It hosts a private view of each exhibition, together with workshops and sometimes talks by featured artists, in addition to the production of interpretation material. This work not only has the benefit of broadening local and regional interest; but it is already helping to enhance Medway's reputation as being at the cutting edge of contemporary artistic vision within Kent and South East England.
Exhibitions change every three months, and often the work is available for sale. The gallery is programmed 18 months ahead and artists interested in applying to have their work exhibited should express interest initially by contacting Medway Council's Arts Team for more information.
