Rochester Castle Educational Visits

Rochester Castle is a hugely impressive and evocative site and makes an ideal class visit for any schools studying medieval history:

  • It includes a large open space that allows a good view of its features and makes it easy to manage groups safely.
  • It was involved in events of national importance.
  • It has been preserved rather than reconstructed and clues to its original form abound.
  • Much of its medieval context can still be imagined from the shape of Rochester today.
  • Entry is free to all schools that book in advance on receipt of a completed booking form.

Planning a trip, including a visit beforehand, will really help the visit run smoothly. There are a few things to bear in mind:

  • The keep can only take 30 pupils at a time and groups enter every half hour.
  • There is plenty for other groups to see and do in the castle gardens (or bailey) while they are waiting to enter the keep.
  • In the keep there is a ratio of one adult to every six children for Years 1 to 3 and one to 10 for all other pupils.
  • The castle can be busy and you may need to book well in advance.
  • To book your visit please telephone the castle to check the date and time is available.
  • To confirm your visit please complete and return the booking form below:
  • Book your school visit online.
