Discover over 400 years of maritime heritage.
At the heart of Medway is Chatham - a diverse maritime destination with a rich history stretching back more than 400 years.
The Historic Dockyard Chatham, was the birthplace of many famous ships including Nelson's flagship HMS Victory. Once one of the most importance naval dockyards in the country, it is now the most complete dockyard of the age of sail to survive in the world.
Chatham is the largest town centre for shopping in Medway. It has a fully pedestrianised High Street and the Pentagon Shopping Centre where many leading brand name stores can be found. Most of Medway's bus routes pass through Chatham's waterfront bus station and the railway station is within easy walking distance from the High Street.
The Brook and Central Theatres in Chatham provide a host of national touring shows and local amateur productions alike.  The Brook Theatre is also a thriving arts centre offering professional theatre, community productions and performances. Â
Much of Chatham is overlooked by Fort Amherst.  This is Britain's best example of a Napoleonic Fortress and is of international historical importance, built to protect the former Royal Dockyard at Chatham from a land-based attack.
